The Creed of Violence hits the dusty trail once again, with a new adaptation of Boston Teran's 2009 romance in the works.

The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond filmmaker Ed Zwick will direct and also write and executive produce with creative partner Marshall Herskovitz for Major Productions, the Creed of Violence publisher's High Top Publishing-owned banner.

Romance is a revisionist Western set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. According to the publisher, it follows "the unlikely partnership between a ruthless assassin and a young government agent, who share a hidden past, as they navigate a violent and treacherous landscape that reflects the brutalities of empire and corruption."

The book has caught the attention of Hollywood before, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale at various points linked to Star, while Daniel Craig and director Todd Field also had their own handicapped version.

“With echoes of my favorite classic films, what could have been a familiar tale of revenge, obligation, and the ties that bind is made totally fresh by the book’s unique sensibility, unquestionable violence, and the reunion of the two most unforgettable characters of all.”

The hope is to make this the first part in a trilogy based on Teran's novels, which also include The White Country and Gardens of Mourning .

“Boston Teran’s plays are about America and the moral territory of its soul,” said Donald Allen, who runs the company with his son, Wyatt. “They address the timely social and political themes of our violent world, as seen through the eyes of our past. They are relevant, challenging the popular narrative and taking a powerful and unique perspective.”

Zwick has played in the historical sphere before, directing Denzel Washington to an Oscar with the Civil War drama Gloria and taking on Tom Cruise's Last Samurai . He won his own Oscar for producing Shakespeare in Love . And last year, he published the memoir Bumps, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Forty Years in Hollywood .
