Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a meeting in London on Thursday to discuss, among other issues, expectations for Friday's meeting in Alaska between the leaders of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, respectively.
Starmer and Zelensky had already had the opportunity to speak via videoconference on Wednesday, in a series of meetings that included Trump, but the British prime minister welcomed him a day later to Downing Street with a symbolic hug intended to demonstrate the rapport between the two.
"Nice to see you, my friend," Starmer said in a message on the social network X where he showed this welcome and confirmed that "the United Kingdom will always stand with Ukraine."
In this regard, the two sides sought to demonstrate the firmness of the alliance. "We continue to coordinate our positions," Zelensky emphasized after leaving the main government headquarters in the United Kingdom without comment, where he discussed with Starmer "in detail" the security guarantees required by kyiv in the event that Trump manages to "pressure" Putin to cease the attacks and establish a "genuine" dialogue.
Zelensky and Starmer also discussed aspects of bilateral military cooperation, an area in which the Ukrainian leader also aims to continue seeking investment to boost domestic manufacturing, for example in the drone sector.
"We have significant potential to increase production volumes, and we urgently need financing to do so," he argued.
